9 experiences.
One Sheffield summer.
A city-wide challenge designed to get you moving, exploring Sheffield, trying new things and using R1SE in different ways throughout July. Each one pairs an outdoor adventure with a session at R1SE — and ticks you closer to Sheffield Legend.

Why we're doing this
The summer R1SE comes outside.
July is the perfect month to step out of the studio and experience how R1SE fits into the rhythm of a Sheffield summer. Four reasons we built Summer Nine:
Community feel in and around Sheffield
Get to know the R1SE staff — the people behind the studios
Show how R1SE fits into the rhythm of your life, not the other way around
Encourage exploring the city and being active over summer
How it works
Four steps. One month.

Challenge 01 · with Rosie
Rosie's Long Ride
Ride hard. Recover properly.
Complete Rosie's favourite Sheffield or Peak District cycle route, then book a compression recovery session at R1SE Kelham. Compression after a long ride helps recovery, circulation and muscle fatigue — the perfect pairing after hours in the saddle.
The activity
Long-distance cycle ride
Sheffield / Peak District
Route shared by Rosie — TBC
What you need
- Bike (or hire — partner discount TBC)
- Helmet
- Water and snacks
- Compression session booking
- Moderate fitness level
Why it works
Long endurance riding loads the legs heavily and leaves the lymphatic system congested. Pneumatic compression sequentially squeezes the limbs in waves, accelerating venous return, clearing metabolic waste and easing DOMS — sport science 101 for cyclists.
Challenge 02 · with Chris
Chris' Peak Walk + Breathwork
Move outside. Reset inside.
Complete Chris' favourite Peak District trail, then attend a breathwork session within 24 hours. After long periods outdoors, breathwork shifts the body into recovery mode and creates a powerful mental reset.
The activity
Peak District hike
Peak District
Chris' route — TBC
What you need
- Walking shoes
- Waterproof layer
- Water and snacks
- Breathwork booking
Why it works
Sustained outdoor exertion leaves the nervous system in a sympathetic state. A guided breathwork session — slow nasal breathing, CO₂ tolerance work, then long exhales — flips the switch to parasympathetic recovery faster than rest alone.
Challenge 03 · with Hanna
Hanna's Wild Swim
Cold first. Heat after.
Visit Hanna's recommended wild swimming spot, then recover with sauna or red light therapy at R1SE. Cold water wakes everything up — heat afterwards drives recovery, circulation and relaxation.
The activity
Outdoor wild swim
Peak District
Spot recommended by Hanna — TBC
What you need
- Swimwear
- Towel + warm clothes
- Sauna or recovery booking
- Confidence in open water
Why it works
A cold-then-heat sequence drives a +530% noradrenaline response (Šrámek et al. 2000) followed by parasympathetic relaxation. Red light at 660 + 850nm adds a mitochondrial recovery layer — collagen up, soreness down.
Challenge 04 · with Cat
Sculpt + Supper
Train strong. Recover properly.
Attend any Sculpt class, then unlock Cat's post-workout recipe and nutrition notes. Training is only half the equation — recovery and nutrition matter just as much.
The activity
Cook Cat's nutritious recipe
Your kitchen
Recipe revealed in the app — TBC
What you need
- Sculpt class booking
- Ingredients for the recipe
Why it works
A Sculpt session creates a 30 – 90 minute anabolic window where the body is primed for protein synthesis and glycogen replenishment. Cat's recipe is designed for exactly that window — quality protein, complex carbs, anti-inflammatory fats.
Challenge 05 · with Ashton
Parkrun + Slow Flow
Run first. Slow down after.
Complete any Sheffield parkrun, then attend a Yin, Slow Flow or Restorative class on the same Saturday. High-impact movement paired with slow recovery work creates balance and lets the body recover properly.
The activity
Any Sheffield parkrun
Sheffield (Hillsborough, Endcliffe, Concord, more)
5km, Saturday 9am
What you need
- Free parkrun registration
- Running gear
- Yoga class booking
- Recovery mindset
Why it works
Running compresses the spine and tightens posterior chains. A 60-minute slow yoga class restores fascia length and shifts the system from go-mode back to rest — research shows the combination of cardio + low-intensity mobility on the same day improves recovery markers compared with cardio alone.
Challenge 06
Dare Yourself
The class you've avoided all year.
Book the class you've always scrolled past but never tried. Wheel Yoga. Aerial. Reformer. Barre. The hardest class to book is often the first one — this challenge unlocks the rest.
The activity
Trying something unfamiliar
Either R1SE studio
What you need
- One booking
- Beginner mindset
- Willingness to try
Why it works
Behavioural research is clear: first exposure is the single biggest barrier to a new habit. Once you've sat in the front row of an Aerial class once, the next 10 bookings are easy.
Challenge 07 · with Jen
Jen's Sunrise Reset
Sunrise movement hits differently.
Complete a sunrise walk at one of Jen's recommended Peak District spots, then attend a morning hot yoga class the same day. A sunrise walk followed by heat and movement creates a full-body reset for the day ahead.
The activity
Sunrise hike
Mam Tor, Surprise View or Stanage Edge — TBC
~20 min drive (free parking before 9 am) or 272 Peak Link Bus — check timings
What you need
- Early alarm
- Walking shoes
- Layers
- Hot yoga booking
Why it works
Early morning sunlight on the eyes within an hour of waking sets the circadian master clock for the day. Adding heat and movement compounds the effect — better mood, sharper focus, deeper sleep that night.
Challenge 08 · with Jill
The Barre Bet
Bring someone who thinks Barre looks easy.
Bring a friend who's never tried Barre — especially someone who thinks it 'can't be that hard.' Take the class together. Finish together. Barre surprises everyone — and it's always more fun with someone beside you.
The activity
Bring a friend who's never tried Barre
R1SE Studio
What you need
- Barre booking (for two)
- One friend
- Water
- Sense of humour for the leg shake afterwards
Why it works
Bringing a friend doubles your adherence odds (Lally 2010, behaviour change research). Plus their first Barre experience is your most reliable conversion route to a new R1SE community member.
Challenge 09
R1SE After Dark
One evening. Two studios. Full reset.
Attend R1SE's special July evening event: breathwork, sound bath, candlelight, and a guided recovery experience. The perfect close to the challenge — slow, calm and restorative after a full month of movement.
The activity
Special evening event
Both R1SE studios
Date in July — TBC
What you need
- Event booking
- Comfortable clothing
- Open evening schedule
Why it works
A full month of movement loads the nervous system. Closing the challenge with a long, slow, sensory recovery session locks in the gains and seals the community thread — there's no better state to finish in than collective parasympathetic calm.

FAQ
Quick questions, quick answers.
Is Summer Nine free to join?+
Yes — any R1SE member can play. There's no separate sign-up. Most challenges include an R1SE session, which uses credits from your normal plan or the Summer 100 Pack.
Do I have to do the challenges in order?+
No. Tackle them in any order, at your own pace, between 1 and 31 July. They're designed to stand alone.
How does R1SE know I've completed a challenge?+
For v1 it's honour-system: you tick each one off on this page when you've done it. Your progress saves automatically in this browser. We'll add auto-detection for R1SE sessions in the next update.
Do I need to be a Sheffield local to take part?+
No, but it helps. Several challenges are anchored at specific Sheffield + Peak District spots. Visitors are welcome — the R1SE-only challenges (Dare Yourself, R1SE After Dark, The Barre Bet) work for anyone.
What if I can't do all nine?+
You still hit the lower tiers. Three completions unlocks Explorer, six unlocks Adventurer. Both come with real rewards.
When will the prizes be confirmed?+
The full reward list lands ahead of launch on 1 July. We'll update this page and let you know.
